There’s something meaningful about returning to where your story began.
Our clients bought this1940’s West Seattle home as newlyweds. Years later, after raising their family elsewhere, they chose to move back in—ready to reimagine the space for their current lifestyle with the help of us a local Edmonds construction company specializing in remodeling, not just in Edmonds but also the surrounding Puget Sound areas.
Their first renovation attempt was disappointing: the original contractor ignored their budget and delivered a design that doubled the cost without delivering meaningful improvements to the layout.
Frustrated, they turned to a friend working with us on a Shoreline kitchen remodel. Soon, we walked through their home together, clarifying goals, discussing their priorities, and mapping out a practical design strategy.
Listening First, Then Designing
Our clients had three main goals: a more open flow of the floor plan, higher ceilings, and a primary suite with a soaking tub and spa-like retreat. Our Project Developer peeked into the attic and discovered the structure would allow for vaulted ceilings, which was an exciting opportunity that became a defining feature of the design.
Once defined by low ceilings and boxed-in rooms, the original layout reflected a different era of living. By removing the unused fireplaces and central chimney, we freed up valuable square footage and improved the home’s efficiency. Relocating the stairwell along the Northeast wall further enhanced the flow and sense of openness.
The result is a light-filled main floor where the kitchen, dining, and living areas connect seamlessly. The first thing you see upon entry is the home’s marvelous view, now framed by a new Milgard triple slider near the kitchen. Just beyond, the client updated the deck to expand their entertainment area and create a stronger connection between indoor and outdoor living—an approach often recommended by a local contractor expert in Edmonds and neighboring areas.
Thoughtful Details, Meaningful Choices
We established a horizontal design language in the kitchen— A Horizontal wood grain by Canyon Creek’s Textured Laminate, Evolve, cabinet pulls in Matte Black Sutton Pulls, set horizontally, and a slim quartz trim by Della Terra in Metropolis Black, all beneath straight-set tile in Matte Glam White . This visually elongates the space and gives it balance.
The new primary suite offers the spa-like escape our clients envisioned: a soaking Mayim tub, a wet room with bench, heated floors, and a separate private water closet. A waterfall countertop in White Quartz protects cabinetry from moisture while lending a clean, modern finish. Even the laundry placement and faucet selection were considered carefully. The specific Delta Trinsic faucet with pull down wand was chosen so the family’s small dog could be washed in the sink.
Throughout the process, our client was deeply involved in design decisions. For example, she discovered a beautiful tile during a stay at an Airbnb, tracked down the maker, and asked if we could incorporate it into the powder room design. It was perfect, and we excitedly agreed.
Designing for the Future
Thinking ahead, main floor was designed with Universal Design principles in mind, allowing the homeowners to comfortably live on one level as their needs evolve. Wide openings and continuous flooring Luxury Vinyl Plank in Magnitude Lansing make the home easy to navigate and adaptable for the long term.
The lower level was updated as well, with the future potential of an Accessory Dwelling Unit in mind. The space has been fully furnished with an exercise room, two-bedroom areas, a bath, and a living area, currently serving as a welcoming place for family to stay and gather. When the time is right, the exercise room can be converted into a kitchen to complete the ADU. We also separated the electrical and heating systems to allow for an easy conversion when that time comes, these thoughtful upgrades ensure lasting comfort and flexibility.
Where Past and Present Meet
This renovation honors the home’s 1940s charm while reimagining it for modern life. What began as a dated, compartmentalized structure is now an open, welcoming home designed for connection and comfort.
The space feels like the energy of its owners—balanced, grounded, and full of life. Every adjustment was made with care, respecting what was already good while making room for what’s next.
