Home Remodeling 101

First Things First

Are you thinking about remodeling your home? Congratulations! Taking on a remodel, whether it is a Bothell bathroom remodel or a whole home remodel, is an exciting journey that can transform your living space and add value to your property. But before you dive in, it’s important to understand how to choose the right contractor and what to expect from the remodeling process.

How to Choose Your Contractor

Selecting a contractor or an Edmonds remodeling company is a lot like choosing a surgeon for elective surgery—you want someone you trust, with a proven track record and the right credentials. Instead of simply gathering bids online, start by asking friends, family, or neighbors for recommendations. Personal referrals are invaluable.

Once you have a shortlist, do your homework:

Check the Edmonds contracting company’s  standing with the Washington State Department of Licensing and the Better Business Bureau to ensure they are properly licensed and have a good reputation.

Visit their office or business location to get a feel for their professionalism and meet the team.

Ask questions such as:

  • How long have you been in the remodeling business?
  • Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?
  • Do you have professional affiliations?
  • Can I speak with past clients or visit completed projects?
  • What is your warranty policy?
  • How do you handle subcontractors and supervise their work?
  • What is your payment structure?
  • How do you clean up the job site?
  • How many projects are you currently managing?
  • Are you involved in the local community?

Choose someone you feel comfortable with—after all, they’ll be in your home for the duration of the project.

The Remodeling Process

A reputable contractor will offer a free initial consultation. This is your opportunity to share your vision, ask questions, and see if the contractor is a good fit. At Chermak Construction, for example, the Project Developer/Site Manager model is used: the Project Developer helps you design a project that fits your needs and budget, while the Site Manager oversees the remodel and is your main point of contact.

During your initial consultation, be prepared for an open conversation about your goals and budget. For a realistic idea of costs, check out the latest “Cost VS Value” report from Remodeling magazine, which can be tailored to your local area.

Finally, always ask for a “Fixed Price Contract.” Estimates can change, but a fixed price contract—backed by a detailed Scope of Work—keeps surprises to a minimum. The price should only change if you request modifications or if an unforeseen issue arises and you approve the additional cost.
