CREATIVITY ON A TIGHT BUDGET 2007 REX Award Winner! 2007 BIAW Award Winner! |

The owner desired more room. A room that served dual purposes, a room for meditation and also a room that provided a second sleeping area for visiting guests. The 1100sf home provided little room for movement, the small lot had no room for external additions and an upper floor addition would push the budget over the owners limit. The solution was in the attic. The existing attic was transformed into a sleeping loft. A Japanese inspired tansu cabinet with built-in steps provided access to loft. Located in the dining area, the tansu cabinet also provided visual interest and additional storage for the existing dining room. No space was wasted in the loft. A storage closet was created along the gable end wall and pull out bookshelves (on rollers) along the eave sections of the roof provided additional storage. Operable skylights was the solution for the rooms lack of light and also gave a larger sense of space to a room with only 54” of head height to the peak. Exquisite bamboo floors, fir woodwork and sandblasted glass support the Asian aesthetic the owner desired. |
